Paint Shop Pro X / XI - Foundation 2 *SS*
[SS104]
$15.00USD

Course Description
This class will cover in-depth color and brush tool features of Corel's Paint Shop Pro X and PSPP XI. Topics covered will include advanced tool options for the Paint Brush, and Eraser Tools, as well as the Picture Tube tool, the Clone Brush and Retouch brushes. We'll also explore in more depth the Materials Palette, gradient editing and color adjustment techniques. You'll learn how to make use of the Brush Variance Palette and custom brush tips to create and use brushes for awesome effect.

This class is designed for the user with a solid basic understanding of Paint Shop Pro. The student must have completed PSP X Foundation Level 1, or comparable other PSP 8 or 9 class at LVS. (Classes may be taken concurrently with instructor's permission.) Much of the material is easily translatable to prior versions of PSP, particularly versions 8 and 9.

PSP XI is almost identical to PSP X, with the exception of the image browser and a couple new filter effects (and one new tool, the Color Changer.) Students can easily translate the PSP X material for use in PSP XI.

Course Excerpt
LESSON 1

Welcome to Paint Shop Pro Foundation Level Two. In this class, you will master many features of Paint Shop Pro's powerful Layers Palette and Layers Menu. You'll learn more about selection features in Paint Shop Pro, as well a bit about channels, blend modes and even some basic mask techniques. Each week, you'll work on a "real-world" project that we hope you'll find useful.

In Paint Shop Pro X Foundation Level One, we worked with Paint Shop Pro X in "out of the box" condition - all toolbars and palettes were set at their factory settings. This made it easier for you to familiarize yourself with various features of the workspace, but it might not be the best way for you to work with PSP. For instance - you may be left-handed and might find it more comfortable to work with the Materials Palette on the left side of the screen. Or, you may like some toolbars turned off till you need them, or perhaps you'd like to build your own custom menus and toolbars. You may even have the option of working with dual monitors, and want to make the best use of all that screen real estate!

You can do all of these things and more in PSP X (and versions 8 and 9, as well.) Let's try it right now! Begin by opening PSP X, and then right-clicking on ANY toolbar or palette. You'll find Customize on the right-click context menu.

You can also find the Customize dialog by going to View>Customize. Click on the command and the Customize dialog box will open, as in Figure 2. You'll see tabs for Commands, Toolbars, Keyboard shortcuts, Menu options, miscellaneous Options and Scripts. (That's a lot of customization you could do!)

Click on the Commands tab to make sure that pane is active. You will notice, the left-hand side of the dialog contains a Categories menu, and the right side shows the commands available within that category (whether or not they actually appear on that menu, palette or toolbar, onscreen.) To add a new tool to an existing toolbar, click on the category name to locate the command, then highlight the command name in the right hand pane. Drag the command's icon to it's new home. (And yes, you can have the same icon in multiple locations. For instance - I have an Edit Selection mode icon on the top of my Layers Palette, as well as in the main Toolbar.)

You can also modify existing toolbars by re-organizing the tool layout. You will still need the Customize dialog open to do this. (Everything is customized with that dialog open, even if you don't have to actually drag anything out of the dialog to do it.) In Figure 3, you'll notice that I've dragged the Mover tool off the same flyout as the Pick arrow (and I'm about to do the same for the Magic Wand, from the Selection flyout.) I just clicked and dragged it directly on to the main toolbar so it was no longer located on a flyout button.

Course Reviews
Jane Wilkinson:
"The explanations and instructions were excellent. The exercises really allow you to see the whole picture and understand how each tool can be used to your advantage, mostly ways and ideas that would not be imaginable without Sally's help. Thanks for the experience."
