Course Excerpt

LESSON 1

Welcome to the first week of the Intermediate Dreamweaver CS3/4 course. In this course we are going to focus on some of the time saving tools in Dreamweaver that help ensure an attractive, functional and consistent web site. Whereas in the first course we tried a lot of techniques and each week our web site looked very different from the previous week, this time we will be creating a complete web site as part of our assignments. This "real world" exercise will allow you to really utilize some of Dreamweaver's capabilities in not only editing but managing a site. We will be doing our assignments with an eye to both form and function as we dig deeper into Dreamweaver's resources.

We will start off with a quick review on design elements before we begin working with CSS. We will look at using Dreamweaver to stylize our web site with its excellent css tools. We finish this week's lesson with image maps and an introduction to the integration with Adobe Illustrator.

Design tips

Design tips? I thought that this was a software class!

This class will be all about learning about Dreamweaver, I promise. Learning the tools is only part of the process. Imagine learning all you can about the tools in your home tool box and then trying to build a tree house without a plan or understanding the dynamics to keep that tree house intact up in the tree instead of wood scraps on your back lawn. The same is true with websites. If you want to attract visitors to your website, give them a pleasurable experience and keep them coming back, you must have an efficient and good looking design. Of course, I could offer an entire 6 week course on design and still not have the time to teach you all there is to know. This week will be just a review on some important design concepts. Throughout the course, I will be offering additional design tips and considerations to Dreamweaver's tools.

Please note: Lessons provide step-by-step instructions with detailed screen captures.

Course Goals

At the end of this course you will know how to work within the Dreamweaver environment to set up a document correctly validate a document for X/HTML and CSS. You will also know how to make a css and a table-based layout, create a page from a tracing image, use image maps, extensions, behaviors, and templates to create well organized, functional and attractive websites. In addition you will experience some of the benefits of the new Creative Suite integration.
