Course Description
Have you always wanted to be able to create a professional looking web site but don't know enough HTML and are just to darned lazy to learn all those complicated HTML tags? Then FrontPage is just the ticket for you! MS FrontPage is a comprehensive application that you can use to create web sites with ease. This program provides everything you will need to create web sites ranging from a simple personal site to a more complex professional site.

Web sites are becoming more and more sophisticated, and they require a sophisticated application that can keep up with your Web development skills and abilities. FrontPage 2003 is the Web site creation and management application with the tools, power, and features to help you produce professional sites that are dynamic and interactive.

As you may be aware, Microsoft discontinued support for FrontPage in 2006. As a result, FrontPage server extensions that are needed for proprietary options in FrontPage are no longer updated or supported. Many web hosts have already discontinued supporting FrontPage.

There still is a lot of mileage left in FrontPage as a Web authoring tool. The FrontPage 2003 class has been updated to reflect the changes. Over the six week duration of the class you will learn how to configure FrontPage so the proprietary components won’t be available. Students will learn the basics of FrontPage; build and upload a simple website. We also will show you how to inset third party options such as web galleries and counters into your pages.

If you are not the creative sort of person when it comes to graphics and you would like a easier way to fancy up your web page, but still want to be browser compatible and not rely on FrontPage extensions there is something out there for you. The program is called Webstyle and it has many options to inset text, navigation bard, buttons and all kinds of neat features and is integrated with FrontPage. We discuss more on this topic in Lesson 4.

Note: LVS students can get Webstyle at a discount directly from Xara. The CD version is $49US plus shipping. To get the discount you will need to fax your order with a special serial number to Xara after you register for this class. In the comments of your registration, request that the serial number and fax number be emailed to you.

This is a 6 week, self-paced, online course. If you need additional help understanding the material presented, you can communicate with the instructor and fellow classmates. Course Prerequisites
Class Level - Beginner

Basic HTML knowledge is helpful but not necessary. Even though you can make a webpage with FrontPage without writing a single line of code, that doesn't mean you should. Sometimes you may need to troubleshoot something that doesn't work, or change it altogether, and being able to read code will be helpful at the very least. You may want to consider enrolling in the Build Your Website I class first.

Course Excerpt
LESSON 1

Welcome to week one of FrontPage 2003! We are sure happy to have you here and hope you are as excited about this class as we are! FrontPage 2003 has come a long way since it's beginnings. FrontPage 2003 is a decade (+) of work by Microsoft to produce the best WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) Editor and site management tool. Compared to previous versions, FrontPage 2003 now includes a foundation of reliable features and supports all the standard file formats. This allows you to design web pages that take advantage of tables, frames, style sheets, and many other internet technologies. Microsoft has added extensive interface enhancements and new capabilities to make all of these things a breeze for us.

FrontPage 2003 has made some major interface changes which are hard to miss if you have worked with previous version of FrontPage. Even if you haven't worked with FrontPage before, I think you will see upon launching the program for the first time that there is truly something different and unique here with FrontPage and hopefully we will be able to guide you through the basics to help you get your first web page up and running.

If you are not aware Microsoft quit supporting FrontPage in 2006 and released a new web editor Expression Web in December 2006. There was a belief FrontPage Extension would still keep working on the servers, after a major server update in February 2007 to the LVS server we found out differently. It appears Server extensions are not being supported and updated anymore by Microsoft so as servers get upgraded the extensions become incompatible. Read the blog by Scott Hendison.

We have reworked the class material to reflect those changes, all the proprietary options have been replaced. You will learn how to use FrontPage as it still is very capable web editor. For those of you that are familiar with FrontPage or have taken this class before please remember this is a introduction to FrontPage 2003 class.

For week one, we look around FrontPage and go over some of the key features. We will take a look at the various ways you can work with pages and Web sites, and the design and coding tools that are are available and essential to you creating a stunning website. We will also introduce you to some of the powerful features that help you do more, and do it more quickly than you would if you weren't using FrontPage.

FrontPage Views

The image below shows a page being edited in FrontPage. Look below the standard menus and toolbars at the top of the image and you will see a row of quick access tabs. Tabs are IN! Everyone seems to love tabs, they are in browsers now as well as many image editors. These tabs let you quickly access any open resources, including the Web site and pages you are working with. If you have a web site open and click the Web Site Tab, you have direct access to the resources and files related to that site. If you have a web page open, click any of the page tabs and you will have direct access to the page for editing.

Speaking of web pages, FrontPage now provides four different ways to view and work on your pages. Views you can choose from include the following :

Design- Displays the page pretty much as it is seen in a Web browser and provides quick access to the HTML tags used in the page. Design View is useful when you want to create pages but don't want to worry about writing the html code, which I think applies to the majority of us in this class huh?

Code- Shows the actual HTML markup code and the text of the page. This is handy for tweaking later, at some point usually you always have to end up tweaking the code somewhere. We won't go in depth on HTML but we will play with this tab a little bit later on.

Split- Displays two view panes: One with the Code view and the other with the Design view of the page. Split view is good when you want to be able to see the design of the page but edit the code quickly and easily. You will find this view handy when polishing pages just before publishing. Clicking anything in the Design view automatically highlights the area of code in Code view.

Preview- Displays a preview of the page as it will appear in most Web Browsers. Although Design view does provide a view of the page layout similar to that of the Preview Pane, it isn't an exact view as you would see it in a Browser like the Preview pane is. So if you want to be certain of a page layout, always view it in the Preview window and not just in Design view. Better yet, you can use the Preview in Browser function which will discuss later.

Looking at any of the images above you can see that you can quickly navigate between the different views by using the row of buttons at the bottom of the interface.

Please note: Lessons provide step-by-step instructions with detailed screen captures.

Course Goals
