Paint Shop Pro X / XI - Foundation 1 *SS*
[SS099]
$15.00USD

Course Description
This class will cover foundation basics of Corel's Paint Shop Pro X and PSPP XI. Topics covered will include workspace layout, toolbars and palettes, image creation and saving, file formats, features, tools and commands, as well as commonly used operations and "Most Wanted" techniques.

This class is designed for the user new to Paint Shop Pro. Much of the material is easily translatable to prior versions of PSP, particularly versions 8 and 9. You will learn to navigate your way through PSP, concentrating on the user-friendly features, but discovering techniques and editing processes you'll use over and over again. Whether you want to use Paint Shop Pro to edit digital photos, create web graphics or any of other thousand of uses, this is the class that helps you gain a solid foundation in the basics of image editing.

PSP XI is almost identical to PSP X, with the exception of the image browser and a couple new filter effects (and one new tool, the Color Changer.) Students can easily translate the PSP X material for use in PSP XI.

This is a 6 week, self-paced, online course. There is no instructor support but there is a class discussion board to interact with fellow classmates.

Course Excerpt
LESSON 1

Welcome to Paint Shop Pro Foundation Level One. In this class, you will learn the basic building blocks of the application, which will allow you to complete "Most Used" tasks that you will need for real-world computing! Each week, you'll be introduced to tools and features which will be used to accomplish tasks, and which will then be the basis for future lessons.

You should already have obtained a copy of PSP, either a full version, or an upgrade version if you own a previous version of Paint Shop Pro (Jasc's versions 5 through 9 qualify for upgrade pricing on PSP.) You may have obtained the download version directly from Corel, or the boxed version from Corel or various other suppliers. If you have not already installed it, you will need the Product Authenticity Card if you have the boxed version, or the serial number provided to you by Corel when you purchased the electronic download version.

If you have already installed PSP, you can skip the next section. However, you might want to peruse it, there may be some valuable tips in there!

When you insert the installation disk, or run the download program, you will see this installation screen in Figure. 1 below -

You will see that you have a number of installation options. You can install just PSP now, and return later to install the others if you wish. We won't be covering any of them in this class, however. (NOTE - the Lynda.com tutorials are not included in the electronic download version, nor is the paper manual. You can obtain a .PDF version of the User Guide at ftp://ftp.corel.com/documentation/PSP/ .)

Begin the installation process by clicking on the "Install Corel Paint Shop Pro X" bar. We've shown several screens (but not all!) from the installation process below to help you.

Figure 2 shows the screen where you will need to input your 17 digit serial number, from either the Product Authenticity Card or from the email Corel sends with an electronic download purchase. Don't lose this number! Keep it in a safe place along with your CD (or downloaded file) in case you ever need to reinstall!

The screen shown in Figure 3 refers to the previous version of PSP that must be installed if you are qualified to use the Upgrade version of PSP. The installer should detect the folder where you have the old version installed, but if it does not, click the Browse button and navigate to the folder where the old version is located, and click OK.

The installer should then validate that a qualifying previous version exists on that computer, as in Figure 4, and will continue with the installation.

The screen shown in Figure 5 allows you to choose what common image file formats will open in PSP when clicked on in Windows Explorer, or opened directly (for instance, as an email file attachment.) If you want those file formats to do that, check the boxes by each one. (By default, they are all already checked in the installation screen.) Here, I've unchecked the .BMP and .GIF formats, I don't want those to automatically open in PSP. In particular - I don't open .GIF files in PSP automatically, because some .GIF's are animated, and PSP can't see the animation, only the first frame. You can always open a file from within PSP, once the application is open. And you can always change the file format preferences, as noted on the screen below.

In Figure 6, you can choose to place shortcuts for PSP on the Desktop as well as the QuickLaunch bar. I find the Quicklaunch bar is a very convenient place to have frequently used icons. You can see my icon in Figure 6a. Just click on the icon to launch PSP.

The installation also creates a folder for you to store any additional resource files you may create with PSP. This folder, called "My PSP Files" is created in My Documents by default, but if you want it created elsewhere, click the "Change" button shown in Figure 7 and tell PSP where to put the folder.

There are a couple additional options on this screen - by default they are both checked, but you can decide if you want to keep them installed. The Thumbnail addon allows you to see thumbnail versions of PSP images when browsing your computer with Windows Explorer. (You will have to have the View option set to "Filmstrip" or "Thumbnail" in Windows Explorer to see this at work.)

The other option is to add the option to use the PSP Image Browser in the right click context menu when you are using Windows Explorer.

Please note: Lessons provide step-by-step instructions with detailed screen captures.

Course Goals
After completion of this class, you will be able to do the following tasks in Paint Shop Pro: Use the standard toolbar and navigate the workspace, create and save images, use the tools, save an image in the most appropriate file format, understand selections, import photos from scanner and camera, use layers, use the text options, and lots more!

Course Reviews
Marion:
"The lessons were the right length to give us time to 'play' with the concepts. Some very good information comparing print/web images. Practical applications such as the business cards were most interesting. The instructions were clear and well sequenced."
