Paint Shop Pro X / XI - Foundation 3 *SS*
[SS106]
$15.00USD

Course Description
This class will cover in-depth features of Corel's Paint Shop Pro X and PSPP XI. This class is designed to familiarize you with various tools and methods to use color and associated patterns and texture in Paint Shop Pro X and PSPP XI Corel's (formerly Jasc's) full-featured image editor.

Our class objective is to expand your knowledge of Paint Shop Pro's color tools and features. It is assumed that the student already has a good basic knowledge of Paint Shop Pro, having completed Paint Shop Pro Foundation 1 satisfactorily, or having comparable experience with recent versions of Paint Shop Pro. This class is designed for the user with a solid basic understanding of Paint Shop Pro. The student must have completed PSP X Foundation Level 1 or comparable other PSP 8 or 9 class at LVS. (Classes may be taken concurrently with instructor's permission.) Much of the material is easily translatable to prior versions of PSP, particularly versions 8 and 9.

We'll be building on tools and features already covered in Foundation Level One, so a quick review of that material before class begins may be helpful.

PSP XI is almost identical to PSP X, with the exception of the image browser and a couple new filter effects (and one new tool, the Color Changer.) Students can easily translate the PSP X material for use in PSP XI.

This is a 6 week, self-paced, online course. There is no instructor support but there is a class discussion board to interact with fellow classmates.

Course Excerpt
LESSON 1

Welcome to Paint Shop Pro X Foundation Level Three. In this class, you'll learn about color - how to create it your images, how to modify it, color schemes for Web and print, and all manner of color-related techniques. Let's get started.

We'll remind ourselves about our primary color tool in Paint Shop Pro X - the Materials Palette. Figure 1 shows the major components of the Materials Palette. The palette can be toggled on/off by clicking the F6 function key. We are looking at the Materials Palette with the Frame Color picker tab active. An important feature to note - the "All tools" check box is checked. (It's grayed out because at the time I captured this palette, I did not have a brush tool that uses the palette active.) By checking this box, we ensure that the colors we choose for Foreground and Background colors will not change when we change tools. However, there may be times when you want a particular tool set to use certain colors and another tool set to another set. An example of this might be the Flood Fill tool set to two pattern materials, while the Paint Brush is set to Black and White, because you are using masks and the Edit Selection mode frequently. In that case, DO NOT check the All tools box.

Figure 2 shows our tooltip for the Foreground and Stroke Materials. It notes the RGB color values along with the fact that we have no texture set with this particular color.

In Figure 3, we have clicked on either the Foreground or Background color chip to access the Materials Properties Editor. We can choose a color on the color tab, using either the color wheel picker, the swatches below, or we can directly enter RGB, HSL or HTML values, should we know what they are already. We can choose to add a texture to our color by checking the Texture box, and choosing from the catalog of textures in the drop down list. Angle and Scale of textures can be adjusted. Remember, adding texture to a color modifies its opacity.

Figure 4 shows the Gradient tab of the Materials Properties editor. You can edit style, type, invert the chosen gradient, set its angle of application and the number of repeats. You can also choose the Center point of how the gradient is applied across the image. Again, texture can be applied to a gradient. In fact, if you have chosen a color already and applied a texture, then move to the Gradient tab, don't forget to check the status of the Texture check box - you may not want the same texture applied to your gradient (or pattern, as well.)

Figure 5 shows the Materials Palette again, with a two colors set as Foreground and Background colors, and a Foreground-Background gradient set as the Foreground material. You can also see the Style picker flyout open on the Background materials chip.

In Figure 6, we can quickly switch between foreground and background colors. Not noted is the Materials swapper, and the Black/White reset button - click that and your colors are automatically reset to black and white. In Figure 8, we see the Pattern tab of the Materials Editor. As with Gradients, we can set an angle and scale for Patterns to be applied. PSP has a number of patterns that will be installed with the application, but you can certainly add your own, as we'll do in just a bit.
