[SS208]
$15.00USD

Course Description
Desktop Publishing with Print Shop is suitable for users of The Print Shop Standard, The Print Shop Deluxe, or The Print Shop Publisher Pro, Versions 21, 22, or 23. (Users of Version 20 will also benefit from the class except for a short section in Lesson 4 about creating a Stationery set.) The Print Shop Standard, Deluxe, and Publisher Pro, are all basically the same program, except that with each upgrade you are provided with more graphics and more templates. All the materials needed to follow these lessons may either be found in your program, or will be provided to you as the lessons progress.

In this class you will use The Print Shop program to make and print flyers and/or signs, two styles of beautiful customized greetings cards for friends and family, a set of personalized mailing labels, a newsletter, and your own set of personal business cards. All these things will be created using your computer, your printer and The Print Shop.

The list of projects above is only a small sampling of the things that are possible to create using this program, and by the time you've completed Introduction to Desktop Publishing with Print Shop, you will be well on your way to becoming proficient in the wonderful world of Desktop Publishing (DTP)!

Course Requirements
In order to complete this class you must have a working version of The Print Shop (Deluxe, Standard or Publisher Pro) installed on your computer. The information contained in these lessons will work with versions 20 through 23.

Windows Vista Users: The Print Shop 23 has been released and is Vista compatible. The Print Shop 22 is not guaranteed to be compatible with Windows Vista, however, Broderbund has released a patch for Version 22. If you have Vista, and you're experiencing problems using The Print Shop Version 22, please visit Broderbund to download and install the patch.

You must be familiar with the way your printer works. How to set it up for duplex printing, greyscale printing, printing preview, and how to add and orient different types of paper. Since all printers work differently, I will be unable to give individualized instructions of printer use.

Course Excerpt
LESSON 1

This week we take a tour of The Print Shop® work space. We'll review many of the various tools and controls, and you will learn how to create a flyer from an existing template, customize it, and then print it out.

What is Desktop Publishing or DTP?

Definition 1.
Desktop Publishing is the process of using the computer and specific types of software to combine text and graphics to produce documents such as newsletters, brochures, books, etc.

Desktop Publishing software is a tool for both graphic designers and non-designers to create visual communications for professional or desktop printing.

Definition 2.
Desktop Publishing is the technical assembly of digital files in the proper format for printing. In practical use, much of the "graphic design" process is also accomplished using desktop publishing and graphics software and is sometimes included in the definition of desktop publishing. Less formally, Desktop Publishing is the process in which text and graphics are put together in your home computer and then printed out on your home printer rather than having it done at a professional printer.

About Program versions
The Print Shop comes in many versions and two types, standard and deluxe. The basic difference between the standard and deluxe versions is the number of free images you get with the program, and in some cases, whether the program is available on CD or DVD. Although this course was written using The Print Shop Deluxe 21, the majority of changes to the way the program works since Version 15 have been minor. Most of the information in this class may be applied to both previous and subsequest versions of The Print Shop and to either the standard or deluxe versions. About your Internet connection

The newer versions of The Print Shop (Versions 20 and up) are set up to automatically connect to the Internet whenever you want to look at a pre-made project or browse the image gallery. Unfortunately, many of the items you're trying to view are quite large and if you don't have a high speed (broadband) Internet connection, you may find this particular feature quite frustrating.

The Standard Toolbar
The Standard toolbar appears at the top of the Design Desk and is very similar to most standard Windows toolbars. Many of the icons will be familiar to you from other programs

Course Reviews
Eileen:
It taught me a lot of interesting features about Print Shop that I hadn't found by myself. I have had several versions of Print Shop but only ever used their graphics in other programs and not explored Print Shop's possibilities.
