Course Description

Students learn the basic techniques to have their work published by newspapers and magazines. Techniques and methods to produce images that are newsworthy with more impact are discussed and demonstrated through assignments. This course covers techniques to get news pictures with impact whether shooting spec shots, environmental portraits, sporting and entertainment events, general news or spot news. Journalism ethics, writing cut lines, and how to sell your work are discussed.


This is a 5 week, self-paced, online course. If you need additional help understanding the material presented, you can communicate with the instructor and fellow classmates. The instructor will monitor and track your progress throughout the class. LVS Online offers many wonderful learning tools to help you get the most out of your online course, including an online portfolio service that manages all your course registrations, certificate of completion option, a class discussion board to interact with your instructor and fellow classmates, free hosting account, and a student upload area.

Course Requirements

A digital camera is a must, preferably a camera with manual control. The student must have a good basic understanding of his camera.

Homework must be reviewed by the instructor in order to earn a certificate. Students have the option of using the Student Upload Area or free web hosting made available for LVS students. Details are provided in the classroom.

If you prefer to use your own web space, you must know how to upload your files to a server. Free tutorials are available:

Plan to devote 3 - 4 hours per week on the lesson and assignment; on this class that may vary according to how much experimenting you choose to do with actions and the other subjects of the class.

Course Excerpt
...Stopping power is the quality in a photograph that forces the observer leafing through a magazine to consciously notice a picture. When a photograph makes the reader stop and look it over, it has stopping power.

The majority of photographs depict ordinary people and events, subjects which are all too familiar. Without stopping power, photographs of such subjects would go unnoticed in a mass of pictures -- and "unnoticed" in photography is a wasted effort and a worthless product.

Course Goals
At the end of the course students will have a better understanding of photojournalism and will have learned to see creatively and to produce photographs suitable for publication, either for newspapers or magazines.
