HomeSite is a very popular HTML editor that allows you to have complete control over your code. It provides the tools you need to simplify Web page development. This 6 week introductory course will teach you the basic skills necessary to utilize many of HomeSite's tools and features.

Course Excerpt
LESSON 1

Let's familiarize ourselves with HomeSite

When you open HomeSite for the first time, it will look something like this.

Open HomeSite

Yours may not look exactly the same since I've customized some of my toolbars which we'll get to later, but it will look similar.

Let's take a closer look at some of the toolbars.

This is the Editor Toolbar. It extends down the left side of the document window from the edit, browse, and design tabs. When you're in Browse mode some of the buttons are grayed out.

Note for version 5 and below: You do not have a macro recorder, player, or manager.

Your Indent Indent and Unindent Unindent buttons look different as well.

HomeSite+ users, your Editor Toolbar looks like the one in HomeSite 5 other than the toggle browser window button is replaced by a Open in Macromedia Dreamweaver/Ultradev button open in Dreamweaver

There are quite a few toolbars clustered together on the left top corner of the work area.

Standard Toolbar: 1. Create New file - Ctrl+N
2. Open file - Ctrl+O
3. Close current file - Ctrl+W
4. Save - Ctrl+S
5. Save As - Shift+Ctrl+S
6. Save All open files
7. Find - Ctrl+F
8. Replace
9. Extended Find
10. Extended Replace View Toolbar:
11. Toggle Resource Pane
12. Toggle Results window
13. Toggle Quick Bar
14. Toggle Special Characters window
15. Toggle Full Screen
16. Launch external browser - Shift+Ctrl+V

Toolbars

Edit Toolbar: 17. Cut - Ctrl+X
18. Copy - Ctrl+C
19. Paste - Ctrl+V
20. Show Clipboard
21. Paste All
22. Clear Clipboard
23. Undo - Ctrl+Z
24. Redo - Shift+Ctrl+Z
25. Repeat Last Tag - Ctrl+Q
26. Run Code Sweeper Tools Toolbar
27. Show Color Palette
28. Verify Links
29. Validate Page
30. Show Thumbnail Viewer
31. Spell Checker - F7
32. Mark Spelling Errors
33. Style Sheet Editor
34. New Image Map
Slight changes in version 5 and HomeSite+. A couple of these button icons look different:

30 (Show Thumbnail Viewer) new thumbnail viewer button and 34 (New Image Map) new image map maker

The Quick Bar

The quick bar is likely my favorite tool in HomeSite. It keeps pretty well all of the tags I want at my fingertips. :) As you can see there are many tabs there and to change quickly to the list of tags under each category, just click a tab. The icons pop up for that group of tags and you just click 'em as you need 'em. Hold your cursor over the buttons for a second if you're not sure what the icon means.

Right click on the Quick bar to bring up a list of Tabs. Check or UNcheck beside the Tab name to show/hide it. I keep everything hidden that I don't use.

Right click on the Quick Bar to show/hide tabs

Note: Some of the buttons look a bit different in HomeSite 5 and HomeSite+. The 3 most notable are the break break button in v 5, anchor anchor button in v 5, and horizontal rule horizontal rule in v 5.

Organize your quick bar TIP for versions 4.5 to 5.5: If you accidentally (or on purpose) drag one of the tabs off the quick bar to float it, when you redock it, it will go to the end of the row. To arrange the tabs to your liking right click on the Quick bar and choose "Organize Quick Bar" from the drop down menu. When the dialog box comes up, highlight the tab/s you want to move and click the up or down arrows. Repeat for any tab you want to move.

HomeSite+ users... Depending on which version of HomeSite+ you have, you may not be able to change the order of, nor hide any of your Quick Bar toolbars. If you have the version that shipped with Dreamweaver MX, there is no right click menu on the Quick Bar and while the entire Quick Bar can be undocked/moved/floated/redocked, the individual toolbars can not be moved at all. :( Other than that, they work the same...click on the name of a tab to view it's tools. There will most likely be a set of arrows on the right hand side for you to scroll through the toolbars because there are so many of them. scroll through the quick bar

The version of HomeSite+ that ships with Dreamweaver MX 2004 works the same as described for versions 4.5 to 5.5

Please note: Lessons provide step-by-step instructions with detailed screen captures.

Course Goals
My goal over is to teach you the basics of HomeSite. By the end of this course, you will be comfortable with many of the features available. In my opinion, HomeSite is a wonderful piece of software and even if you don't choose to use all of it's features, I'm sure you will find it invaluable.
